Understanding HVAC Guidelines

Once I purchased my first home, I realized that I needed to do my part in caring for my home appliances. In addition to reading the user manuals for my kitchen appliances and state-of-the-art plumbing system, I realized that I also needed to do a little research about HVAC. Because I had no experience with HVAC systems, I called out a professional to teach me a thing or two. It was fascinating to talk with him, and I was able to take notes about all kinds of important topics, such as maintenance, troubleshooting, and even shopping for a new system. This blog is all about understanding HVAC guidelines.

Air Conditioning Repair Or Replacement: How To Choose

Marilou Girard

If your home's central air conditioning is malfunctioning, you're probably wondering if you should call for repair or just replace the whole thing. If you're not sure which is the best solution, it's important that you give a few things careful consideration. Here's a look at some of the things that you should think about as you decide whether or not it's worth repairing your malfunctioning air conditioning system.

Is It An Efficient Model?

Is your air conditioner efficient when it's working at its best? Do you find that your home stays cool and comfortable without drastic effects on your home energy bill? If that's the case, you should consider simply repairing the problem with your air conditioner. You won't likely gain much in efficiency from a new model if yours is already highly efficient. Instead, you should only consider replacement based on efficiency if your existing unit isn't as efficient as the models on the market now.

Is The Repair Affordable?

Depending on what's wrong with your air conditioner, you may find that it's in your best interest to simply repair it. If your repair estimate is affordable and reasonable, there's little reason to spend more money on a replacement. Instead, be easy on your budget and pay for the repair. However, if the estimate for the repair is nearly the same as the cost for a new unit installation, you might benefit from replacing the system entirely.

Are You Dealing With Frequent Malfunctions?

As your air conditioner ages, you'll find that malfunctions become increasingly common. If you've been dealing with repairs on your air conditioning system far more frequently than you'd like, you might decide that it's time to just replace the system. However, if you're only dealing with smaller, more affordable repairs periodically, it's often in your best interest to just fix the unit you have.

Is Your Air Conditioner Older?

If you're still using the same central air conditioner that the prior owners did a decade or more ago, you might decide that it's just time for an upgrade. Your air conditioning repair technician can evaluate the age of your air conditioning system and help you decide if your unit is due for replacement based on age. You may find it's in your best interest to just repair the system and wait a couple more years, or it may prove beneficial to replace it now. Talk with your repair technician like B & H Heating & Air Conditioning about your options.

These are a few of the things you should consider when you're trying to decide whether to repair or replace your air conditioning system.
