Understanding HVAC Guidelines

Once I purchased my first home, I realized that I needed to do my part in caring for my home appliances. In addition to reading the user manuals for my kitchen appliances and state-of-the-art plumbing system, I realized that I also needed to do a little research about HVAC. Because I had no experience with HVAC systems, I called out a professional to teach me a thing or two. It was fascinating to talk with him, and I was able to take notes about all kinds of important topics, such as maintenance, troubleshooting, and even shopping for a new system. This blog is all about understanding HVAC guidelines.

3 Odors You May Smell with a Failing AC

Marilou Girard

There is always something that is demanding your attention every single minute of the day. While you have many priorities, there is a good chance that your home's HVAC system is not one of them. However, it is important to understand that failing to prioritize the integral appliances in your home—or at least familiarizing yourself with the warning sign so failure—can and likely will lead to discomfort and costly repairs. One of the most common signs of a failing HVAC system in the home is an unusual smell. Keep reading to learn three specific odors that you may experience when there is a problem with your HVAC system.

Rotten Egg Odor

If your home smells like rotten eggs, there is a good chance that there is a natural gas leak. This is not something that you should try to deal with on your own, as natural gas can be very dangerous. Instead, you should evacuate your residence and contact a professional AC contractor. Do not re-enter your home until a professional has been able to address the situation and give you the green light that your home is safe.

Burning or Electrical Odor

If you notice an odor that smells like there is something overheating, the chances are likely that this is true. Electrical issues tend to occur with various components within the HVAC system, such as the motor and blower fan. Electrical fires can be particularly dangerous to your property as well as your family. Therefore, when you smell an electrical or burning odor, it is better to be safe than sorry. Immediately cut the power to the HVAC system and get in touch with a professional to inspect the unit.

Musty or Moldy Odor

If you notice a moldy or musty odor moving throughout the home, this is likely indicative of mold somewhere in the home. As a result of the risk for moisture escaping from the HVAC system into the ducting, there is a chance for the growth and accumulation of mold. Due to the fact that mold is incredibly unsafe to breathe in, it is imperative that you contact an HVAC contractor to come to your home, investigate the issue, and clean the air ducts. This will generally resolve the issue and minimize the chances of it occurring again.

If you have noticed any of the aforementioned odors in your home or any other sign that appears to be unusual for the operation of your HVAC system, you should contact an air conditioning repair service in your area.
