Understanding HVAC Guidelines

Once I purchased my first home, I realized that I needed to do my part in caring for my home appliances. In addition to reading the user manuals for my kitchen appliances and state-of-the-art plumbing system, I realized that I also needed to do a little research about HVAC. Because I had no experience with HVAC systems, I called out a professional to teach me a thing or two. It was fascinating to talk with him, and I was able to take notes about all kinds of important topics, such as maintenance, troubleshooting, and even shopping for a new system. This blog is all about understanding HVAC guidelines.

Maintain Your Air Conditioning System

Marilou Girard

There are few things that are more refreshing than coming home to a nice cool home after a long day at work. Air conditioning is one of the best things about a home, but if the air conditioning in your home goes out, things can get miserable. If you have never experienced what it is like to have a home that is in the high 80's be sure that you never have to experience it because it simply is terrible. Air conditioners are much more likely to go out during the summer when you are using them because they are put under much more strain. So, to ensure that you do not have to endure a few days of crazy heat in the home, here are a few tips to maintain your air conditioning:

Change The Filters

The air conditioning system in your home can be affected by even the smallest amount of dust. If you have a lot of dust and debris it is extremely important that you change out your filter and change our your filter often. It is important that you check your filter every two months, and plan on changing it every three to four months. The good news is that filters are not that expensive and can be found at almost every home improvement store. Each air conditioning unit is a little bit different but with a screwdriver, you should be able to replace the filter no problem.

Air Ducts

The air ducts in the home are the only way that the air is able to travel from the unit to every room in the home. Well, if the air ducts are clogged then it puts a lot of strain on the unit. Over time dust and other debris will build up in the duct system. This can cause your unit to work extra hard and malfunction. Not only is the dust and the debris bad for your home, but it is also bad for you. Dust and mold are some of the most common reasons that individuals get upper respiratory infections. So, once a month take a very high powered vacuum and clean out each air duct in the house. Then, once every other year you should hire a professional to come in and clean out all of the air ducts to ensure that there is no debris that is stuck deep within the duct system.
