You will want to hire an HVAC maintenance contractor to take a look at your central air conditioning unit once you have shut it down for the year. This way, if there are any belts that are starting to wear thin or any Freon that needs to be added to the unit, those things can be done before it sits during the cold weather for a few months. Also, this will help ensure that your central air conditioner will be good to go as soon as the weather warms back up.
Sweep It Off
One of the first things that you will want to do is to make sure that you are taking the time to sweep any debris that is sitting on top of or along the sides of the air conditioning unit. To do this, simply use a clean broom and make sure that you are being extra cautious around lines and pipes so you do not accidentally pull anything out of place.
Cover It Up
It is essential that you take the time to properly cover your central air conditioning unit when it is not going to be in use for an extended amount of time. The best option would be to purchase a cover that was specifically designed for central air conditioners. This will ensure a proper fit, which will mean you will not have to worry about any water getting under the cover. The reason you want to keep water off of the unit is because during winter, that water will freeze to ice, which can cause significant damage to the central air conditioner. If you do not have a specific air conditioning cover, you can use a standard construction tarp. You will need to make sure that the tarp is large enough so it will cover the entire unit. Use rocks or tarp stakes to secure it in place so it will not blow away.
With those tips in mind, you should have a much easier time keeping your central air conditioning unit in the best possible shape.
